We are a new business aiming to help women (and men) with concerns that they may have regarding their breasts. Predominantly aimed for those clients aged 40 years and younger who may have concerns such as breast lumps, nipple discharge, or even implant concerns, we offer an ultrasound service to scan the breasts, perform clinical breast examination, and suggest onward referral (if needed) for a mammogram or even breast biopsy - as per the recommendations and guidelines of Triple Assessment.
So, what can you expect from your appointment?
Under the guidelines of Triple Assessment you will have a Clinical Breast Examination (CBE) followed by a Breast Ultrasound carried out by our Consultant Radiographer. This is all that may be required for the majority of clients. However, if further evaluation is required you will be recommended to have the third aspect of the Triple Assessment process – a breast biopsy - and this will mean that your GP refers you to your local breast unit at your local hospital. You will have the report to take to your GP to help to facilitate this.
While it is known that mammography is the gold standard for breast screening not all mammograms can detect all kinds of breast cancers. Similarly, some breast ultrasound abnormalities may not be picked up with ultrasound. Some of the limitations of ultrasound can be that while ultrasound is one of the tools used in breast imaging, it does not replace annual mammography. Another example can be that some calcifications that are seen on mammography cannot be seen on ultrasound - including some early breast cancers which only show up as calcifications on mammography.
While a biopsy may be recommended to determine if a suspicious abnormality is a cancer or not, it is important to understand, however, that some suspicious findings on an ultrasound scan that require biopsy are not cancers.
With no breast ultrasound service such as this available in the near vicinity, we can offer a quick and reliable service, in a timely manner, and either address your issues directly or suggest referral to someone who can help.
